But wait till you see what they've done... it isn't the usual obedience (or rebellion) to an assignment. To a person, the student in the abroad environment began to discover his or her own passion for meaning, for beauty, however that may be defined. He and she began to see design principles at work and to understand the choice to use illusion. They began to be open to the fact that the linear, SOL standards of learning were NOT the only way, certainly not the most meaningful way to learn once past the age of seven. Judging by their sketchbook /journals and their creative projects which they were all required to do, meaning itself began to take on a new meaning. In short students began to shine. They were assigned three collages but many of them did more. Some students prefer to stay in the grid, others went wild. See for yourself and please, if you are an artist, teacher or any other kind of educator/parent please feel free to add your own observations. My observation is this: the classroom is still useful and convenient, but we've entered a time of global interaction and community. Without treading on the soil of other lands, learning often remains compartmentalized, academic, and that compartmentalization no longer lights fires. In fact academics can act too much like a preservative which can kill the taste. Learning has got to be organic. It must be ALIVE. It has got to shine. Like we were born to do.
